I am 29 years old (about to be 30 in February), meaning I’ve been a woman for 29 years and none of those years I would ever consider easy.
As women, we go through so many things that sometimes we wish we were men instead. I can remember when I was younger that I wished I was a boy, because it always seemed they had it easy. At a young age, we are taught that looks are everything. If you don’t have the right look then you are not good enough for anyone. We fight with magazines, articles and commercials telling us how to make ourselves look better (aka have the look.) There was a study done saying that girls are starting to wear makeup at the age of 12. Seriously, 12 year old girls are wearing makeup?!?!?! Why?!?!?
Why are mothers letting their girls wear makeup?
Are you telling them that their face isn’t good enough so cover it up with some powder to make yourself look better?
Is it because your girls are begging you because everyone else is doing it?
When will it stop?
When can we tell them that they don’t need makeup because their face is beautiful as it is and that God made you just the way he wants you?
When can we tell them that and they believe it?
Will society ever let us believe in ourselves?
I don’t have the answers to these questions, but my hope is that we can turn this world around and start believing in ourselves.
I’ve been married for 4 years now and even to this day I struggle with self-image. Especially being in the fitness industry. The spot light is always on you! But being married 4 years and with my husband for 8 years, you get the question when are you going to have kids? (I’m currently pregnant with a boy) Once again, being in the fitness industry can make this question a lot more difficult. But also, being a woman and dealing with all the issues I listed above can make you cautious as well. Do I want to bring a girl into this world? This world that will always tell you that you are not good enough. That you need to wear makeup because your face isn’t good enough. You need to go to a tanning bed because your skin color isn’t good enough. You need to dye your hair because your hair color isn’t good enough. The list goes on and on! Can I handle the pressure of telling my little girl that she is good enough, while still trying to build my own self confidence?
Another thing being in the fitness industry I have these goals I want to achieve and as a woman having a kid can push those things back. Will I be okay with that? Putting my goals on hold to give life to a child. As a woman getting pregnant means you can’t do everything you are doing now. You are carrying a child and you need to remember it’s not all about you anymore! Take care of yourself but remember to take care of your child.
The struggles of a woman start at a very young age and sometimes can keep piling up. One piece of advice is to look at yourself in the mirror and say “I am good enough.” Do that every day and go about your day not worrying about what society is telling you and anyone else. Focus on being the best you! Can I tell you that it does get easier as we get older? No. The only thing that gets easier as we age should be our happiness, because we are still alive and hopefully living our dreams.
I’m not saying that men have it easy and they don’t struggle in life. There is plenty of men who deal with some of the same issues that women deal with. Especially self-image. We all deal with some sort of self-image.
Just remember that every day is fresh new start. Don’t even think about the past! Focus on each day as they come, be the best you and my advice it to ignore society and focus on you and getting towards your goals no matter what they are! Always be positive and lead by example. If you have the privilege of bringing a girl into this world, from day 1 you tell her she is good enough and you tell yourself the same thing and lead by example. Because guess what? YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH!
